Jocelyn Smith, R.NNurse Manager for LifeQuest Centre for Reproductive Medicine |
|
Jocelyn Smith, RN, has worked in the field of infertility and reproductive medicine for over 25 years. For the past 18 years, she has worked as an integral part of the LifeQuest Centre for Reproductive Medicine team.
Jocelyn was born in Hamilton, and grew up in Toronto. She studied nursing at Humber College and graduated as an RN in 1979. Immediately after graduation, Jocelyn began working at The Toronto General Hospital, at first in the neurology department, then in the intensive care unit (ICU). After three years, Jocelyn moved to the labour and delivery unit where she worked for an additional two years. During this time, an opportunity to build a new IVF clinic in the reproductive biology unit at the hospital arose. Jocelyn was the perfect candidate. At the beginning of her time in this specialized unit, Jocelyn handled all the hands on patient care, including meeting patients, and following them through the entire process of IVF, from their first day, right through their retrievals and embryo transfers, right up to the pregnancy tests. After several years, as the unit grew in size, Jocelyn began to hire additional nurses and staff, and ran the administrative side of the unit. This unit was one of the first IVF clinics in Canada, and Jocelyn Smith was there from the beginning. During this time, she also gave lectures and presentations across Canada, the United States and abroad to numerous nursing conferences. In addition, in 1990, she co-wrote a book about infertility treatment called Making Babies, A Guide to Fertility and Infertility. In 1992, Jocelyn was approached by two well-known infertility physicians to help them open a private IVF unit in downtown Toronto. She was hired on the spot, and almost immediately, began setting up one of Canada’s first private IVF units, including organizing all the logistics, hiring the staff, developing policies, and organizing models for patient care. Today, this clinic is LifeQuest Centre for Reproductive Medicine. Currently, in addition to her role as Nurse Manager at LifeQuest, Jocelyn is the volunteer President of IAAC (Infertility Awareness Association of Canada), and is a member of the CFAS (Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society) and the ASRM (American Society of Reproductive Medicine). She also was a surveyor for Accreditation Canada. In 2009, she was awarded the Care and Life Award (2009) of the CFAS. return to all Toronto events > | |
