Angela Self

Co-Founder of Smart Cookies and Journalist for The Globe and Mail

A self-proclaimed former financial disaster turned money mentor, Angela co-founded Smart Cookies in 2007 and is currently running its PR and Communications departments. The company’s proven system for financial success has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, MSNBC, the New York Times, New York Daily News and Money Magazine.

Before becoming a Smart Cookie, Angela successfully completed two degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts (English) from the University of Western Ontario in 2002 as well as a Bachelor of Journalism (Broadcast) from Ryerson University in 2004. Upon graduating, she immediately began working in the media industry in various positions: as a story producer with Canada AM, at a Toronto PR firm, a writer with a reality TV dating show, and as a former columnist with Metro and TV Week. Like many in her peer group, she was working in jobs she enjoyed, but ones that came with long hours and little pay - definitely not earning enough to support her lifestyle or fund her dreams. She was also living well beyond her means. After burying her head in the sand for far too long, she knew something had to change.

Inspired by an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show on personal finance, Angela and her four friends decided to take matters into their own hands and develop a company that promoted strategies for turning their finances around – without sacrificing their style, social lives, or sanity. Just over a year and a half later, Angela and her team found themselves on the Oprah show outlining their achievements as well as strategies for financial success, all while sharing the stage with one of the most influential women in the world today. As a result, the company’s self-title show currently appears on the OWN network.

In her current endeavors and in addition to focusing on her SmartCookie brand, Angela acts a columnist with The Globe and Mail and GlobeInvestor.com as well as a freelance writer and PR consultant. With already so many accomplishments under her belt, another milestone includes being a bestselling Co-author of two personal finance books: The Smart Cookies Guide to Making More Dough and The Smart Cookies Guide to Couples and Money.
